Tragedy struck the campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville when two students were found dead Monday in a parked vehicle, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from the university community. The incident occurred in the 1500 block of University Boulevard, where police responded to a welfare check at the request of concerned friends or family members. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of 20-year-old Luke Reimer of Indian Shores, Florida, and 20-year-old Mary Mich of Downington, Pennsylvania, inside a car parked near the St. Agnes Residence Hall.
According to university President Father Dave Pivonka, no foul play is suspected at this time. Early investigations suggest that the deaths may be the result of a tragic accident, possibly involving vehicle exhaust or an engine malfunction. The university expressed its condolences and emphasized that the circumstances are still under investigation as police detectives examined the scene thoroughly. The cause of death has not been officially confirmed, but authorities are pursuing all leads to determine what led to this heartbreaking loss.
Reimer, a junior and a member of the men’s lacrosse team, was remembered by the university and the campus community as a well-liked and valued student. Mich, also a student at the university, was similarly honored in the wake of the tragedy. The university community has come together to mourn the loss of these young lives, offering prayers, support, and comfort to their families and friends during this difficult time.
In response to the incident, the university promptly arranged counseling services to assist students and staff coping with grief and shock. A prayer vigil was scheduled for 7 p.m. at Christ the King Chapel, providing a space for reflection, prayer, and communal mourning. Out of respect for the grieving community, all evening campus events were canceled to allow students and staff to process the tragedy and support one another.
The Steubenville Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. While the details remain preliminary, the university and law enforcement officials are focused on providing clarity and support. The loss of Reimer and Mich has deeply affected the campus, prompting calls for unity and compassion as the community navigates through this heartbreaking event. The university has also urged members of the campus and local community to support the families and friends of the fallen students during this challenging time.
