Renée Sarah Lapointe, a talented athlete, compassionate friend, and proud UMaine graduate from Van Buren, passed away on January 17 at the age of 21 in Old Town. Her family shared their grief through an obituary published this week, highlighting her remarkable achievements and the personal struggles she faced in recent years.

Born on December 28, 2004, in Caribou, Renée was the beloved daughter of Michael and Christine Lapointe. She distinguished herself in multiple sports, earning All-Aroostook honors in soccer and tennis, and securing a spot on the All-State soccer team. Beyond athletics, she was a dedicated dancer for over 16 years at The Maine Dance Academy, where she trained in pointe, tumbling, and performance. Renée’s talent and dedication earned her titles such as Little Miss Maine Potato Blossom, Pre-Teen Miss Maine Potato Blossom, and Junior Miss Maine America.

A highly accomplished student, Renée graduated from Van Buren Secondary School in the top tier of her class and served as Honor Society president. At just 17, she entered the University of Maine at Orono on a full scholarship, completing her degree a year early last spring. During her college years, she worked as a server at Texas Roadhouse and was a valued member of the Pi Phi sorority, known for her kindness and loyalty.

In recent years, Renée quietly battled mental health challenges, her family and friends said. Her resilience amid these unseen struggles was a testament to her strength. A GoFundMe page organized by family friend Tina Belanger has raised over $13,000 to cover funeral costs and to establish a scholarship in Renée’s honor, reflecting her passion, resilience, and dedication to making a difference.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 27, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church in Van Buren, with arrangements made by Lajoie Funeral Home. Renée is survived by her parents, brother Colby Lapointe of Bangor and his wife Julia, her boyfriend Adolfo Cadillo of New Jersey, and extended family members. Her legacy lives on through her achievements and the love she shared with those around her.
