A heartbreaking incident has left the community mourning the tragic injury of 12-year-old Nico Antic, who was mauled by a suspected bull shark while jumping off rocks into Sydney Harbour. Nico remains in an irreversible coma, and his family is preparing for the worst possible outcome. The attack occurred Sunday afternoon at Nielsen Park in Vaucluse, near Shark Beach, where Nico was enjoying a day of swimming with friends.

Nico’s friends heroically pulled him from the murky waters after the attack, which happened around 4:20 p.m. Water police quickly responded, providing first aid before paramedics rushed Nico to Sydney Children’s Hospital. Despite undergoing emergency surgery that night, Nico’s condition has shown no signs of improvement, his sister Sophie Antic shared this week. His family and loved ones are holding onto hope amid the devastating news.

The incident has reignited concerns over shark activity along the New South Wales coast, with authorities noting a recent increase in shark attacks. In the 48 hours following Nico’s attack, three other victims were reported in the region, attributed to the warm waters and runoff from recent storms that have drawn bull sharks closer to shore. As a precaution, over 20 beaches across the area have been closed, with officials urging swimmers to stay away from murky or storm-affected waters to prevent further tragedies.

In response to the incident, a GoFundMe campaign was launched by Victor Piñeiro, a family friend. The campaign has already raised over $130,000 AUD to help cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and other related expenses for the Antic family. Piñeiro expressed his heartfelt sympathy, noting Nico’s vibrant spirit as a beloved soccer player and a joyful boy who “never fails to smile.” The funds will provide some relief to Nico’s grieving family during this difficult time.

Steve Pearce, CEO of Surf Life Saving NSW, attributed the recent spike in shark activity to the heavy rains and runoff that have clouded waters, attracting predators closer to the coast. NSW Police confirmed that Nico’s condition remains unchanged as of Tuesday, leaving the community in somber anticipation of the coming days.

Nico’s family describes him as a bright, joyful boy loved by many. His innocence and zest for life have touched everyone who knew him. As the family and community grapple with the tragedy, the focus remains on Nico’s wellbeing and the support needed for his loved ones during this devastating time.
